Painted Minatures? - Vitapondera - 10-23-2006

Are there any good quality painted minatures around 15mm to 30mm?

Although I'm a fan of Warhammer 40k I just don't have time to paint things anymore.

I like the Corvus Belli but those come unpainted.

Thanks!

Plastic figures - big scale - MAXIMVS - 10-27-2006

See the link below for the brand new range of Roman legionaries by Revell's Epixx brand.

They're big figures though, about 4 inches tall for a standing figure. Stockists have them in stock now. I got mine almost next day service from the second link (use the search to find 'epixx', on page 3 and 4).

For a production 'toy' figure they are exceedingly accurate. Very good quality paint finish, realisticly weathered, etc. They have the Ermine Street Guard's shield pattern so I had to buy them!

I award them top marks. They are about £4 each and I've got a bunch of them on my computer desk looking at me as I type this.

Maximvs,

Those figures from Revell are quite impressive indeed.

Vitapondera,

If I might suggest some painted figures in the 54mm (1/32) scale then check out Conte Collectibles. Not cheap, but very good looking and, if you can afford it, worth the price. They may eventually release the Romans in plastic, as they are doing with their Spartan range, but no plans have been announced yet.

Re: Painted Minatures? - MAXIMVS - 10-27-2006

I've just orderd a box of 1/32 Imperial Romans by Call to Arms Figures to look at (16 figures).

They haven't arrived yet, so I can't comment. The box art looks good (but from past experience, that's nothing to go on necessarily!)

Maximvs,

Please give us a review when the figures arrive and you have had a chance to give them the "once over." You are correct, the box art does look good -- one can only hope that the figures themselves live up to that promise.

Let us know, and thanks.

Thanks for the response. Any idea where the epixx figures can be found in the USA?

Re: Painted Minatures? - MAXIMVS - 10-28-2006

Try a search for Hobby Stores or Revell and see if this brings up any leads.

Haven't found any USA distributors for the Revell Epixx line. Is it only a European thing? Thanks!

Re: Painted Minatures? - MAXIMVS - 10-31-2006

I always thought that Revell were a US company!

That may be true or not, but they may not yet be offering to the US market I suppose.

On the other subject - the Call to Arms 1/32 figures - they arrived today ...

Very nice, grey stiffish polystyrene (like the old 1/32 Airfix figures). Four action poses (4 examples of each). All are legionaries (unlike the box art!). All have gladius in hand, two with raised arms, one with lowered but looking agressive and one with arm down but gladius raised. Slight 'flash' around moulding but minimal. No raised detail on shield (except the boss of course) so you could paint or add any decals. All wear lorica segmentata 'Corbridge type B' with what looks like Imperial Gallic H helmets.

Only slight critisism might be that of the four figures, only one has his shield facing forward. The other three hold their shield in what I'd call an 'open position' with the shield front facing to the side/rear. This is probably to facilitate mould making. It doesn't exactly spoil the figures, but they wouldn't stand like that if the enemy were just about to make contact, but you would if you were giving chase!

It's the sort of box of figures that makes you think a second set might appear with officers and standards, etc.

All in all - Yes! Good effort, good figures

Re: Painted Minatures? - Marcus Mummius - 10-31-2006

Is there any chance you could show us a picture of these miniatures?

I would like some romans and some suitable enemies to make a nice diorama.

Vale,

Re: Painted Minatures? - Narukami - 11-02-2006

Thanks for the review and photos Maximus.

Yes indeed, now what they need is a command set.

The actual figures rarely match the box art, though perhaps those from Dragon are a welcome exception. Too bad they concentrate on WWII and not ancient Rome.

Forces of Valor has branched out from WWII into ancient Rome, Pirates, Vikings, the American Civil War, the 100 Years War, etc. Their Roman figures are pretty good, but limited poses -- no command figures.

Well, not yet any way.
