Re: Byzantine Weapons and Warfare - Ceasar Augustus - 05-27-2008

Do you have any illustrations?

Re: Byzantine Weapons and Warfare - aitor iriarte - 05-27-2008

Peter,
Is there any possibility of getting a better (close-up) view of those darts at the dragon's neck?
I cannot see the lead weights... :?
Many thanks in advance!

Re: Byzantine Weapons and Warfare - Ceasar Augustus - 05-27-2008

I can't make out any detail on them. Care to enlighten me?

Re: Byzantine Weapons and Warfare - hoplite14gr - 05-27-2008

Martin,
if you have somebody to assist you reading Greek I can sent you the text through e-mail else it has to wait translation.

John,
An image of a Norman serving in the "Latinikon" of the Komninoi is here:
http://dbaol.com/armies/army_133_figure_1.htm .

Most "latininkoi" are depicted by artists as wearing lamelar armor over chainmail.

Kind regards

Re: Byzantine Weapons and Warfare - Nicholas Gaukroger - 05-28-2008

The problem is likely to be the full stop at the end of the link - try stripping it out.

Re: Byzantine Weapons and Warfare - hoplite14gr - 05-28-2008

Nicholas is right.

Click in Kn(Norman) to see the "Latinikos"

Kind regards

Re: Byzantine Weapons and Warfare - Urselius - 05-29-2008

Thanks for the offer Stefanos,

I'm afraid my Greek doesn't extend beyond 'o logariasmos sas parakalo.' I once shared a student house with a girl from Athens but don't have access to Greek translators at present.

Martin.

Re: Byzantine Weapons and Warfare - Ceasar Augustus - 05-29-2008

Thanks hoplite I can read it now.

Re: Byzantine Weapons and Warfare - hoplite14gr - 05-29-2008

I will translate it then Martin but it will be slow.
Kind regards

Re: Byzantine Weapons and Warfare - Peter Raftos - 05-29-2008

Aitor,
The detail image is pretty lousy but I think you are right - no lead weights. Perhaps they are arrows or cross bow bolts?

Re: Byzantine Weapons and Warfare - aitor iriarte - 05-29-2008

Many thanks, Peter! Big Grin
Conversely, the problem about arrows or crossbow bolts is that they would need Akritas to hold a bow or crossbow on his hands...
What is he holding on his left hand? :?

The plate is broken but it looks like a sword.

Re: Byzantine Weapons and Warfare - aitor iriarte - 05-29-2008

Ah, yes, thanks, Peter! 8)
