"Battle For Rome" Discovery Channel - A_Volpe - 11-07-2006

The other nite I caught some parts of "The Battle For Rome" which had 2-3 sections: "Titus"(?), "Caesar" and "Nero".

I was shocked and pleasantly surprised to see the earlier timeperiods (Titus, Caesar) having Legionaries...Nearly ALL of them, in Maille, Montefortino helmets (with feather crests, too!), and even the large Oval Scutum!

Certainly one can split hairs on specific details (Monte's did not have the full chin strap to the back of the helmet, as well as being dark green in color, not a nice shiny brass/bronze; Pila were clunky, intermixed with clunky looking hasta; Battle sequnces had too much "hack and slash" Gladiator style fighting; all Officers had "Robot-Pecs" silver muscled cuirass)

but, the mere fact they made a tremendous effort to go at least this far with Republican/Caesarian troops, makes me happy....it's a good start!

I was also surpirsed to see Karl Johnson, who portrayed Cato in HBO's ROME, was in this version of Caesar vs Pompey, playing as Marsalas...AND I *think* it was Kenneth Cranham playing as Pompey, such as he did in ROME.

Re: "Battle For Rome" Discovery Channel - Niedel - 11-08-2006

I think this is the same series as the BBC Rome series recently shown. Parts 4, 5, and 6 will follow the coming weekend, I believe.
