Ancient Roman Extreme Home Makeovers Pompeii - Restitvtvs - 12-03-2006

Thank you, Heiko, for your kind comments! Smile

For all us "Home Improvement", "Do-It-Yourselfer" types, here is a domus in Pompeii, with several layers of wall treatment & painting, including tile "opus reticulatum".

Considering the number of layers, maybe this is shows about 100 to 200 years of habitation?

Re: Roman Frescos and Other Paintings - aitor iriarte - 12-09-2006

Not neccessarily, William... :?
We have the wall constructed in reticulatum, then a first, thick layer of coarse mortar to get the wall even. Then a second, finer layer and finally a third, very thin one carrying the fresco painting.
Of course, there are many examples or re-painted rooms but, judging from the pic, not this one 8)

RAT Topic/Thread: "Pompeian Red" and Mercury - Restitvtvs - 01-13-2007

Another Roman painting RAT Topic/Thread:

Pompeii red uses mercury compounds that naturally change over time, eventually becoming medium grey to dark black.

Re: Roman Frescos and Other Paintings - Sergey Lenkov - 01-18-2007

Thank you, Restitvtvs. Though some frescoes are well-known (Villa of Mysteries) - others were new for me and very impressive. Stange it may seem but some of them could remind of Baroque or Rococo paintings. Though painters of the 17-18 th. centuries saw these frescoes and were impressed by them - still the craftsmanship of the Ancient artists is very impressive. And it took nearly 1500 years for the European painters to reach out for this level.
