A Slinger: hat or helmet? - geala - 12-28-2006

Hello,

what would you think is represented in the following drawing (it is from slinging.org, shall depict a slinger, 5th c. BC, source unknown): a hat, made of felt, or perhaps some kind of leather cap?

http://www.slinging.org/historygallery.html

It has not exactly the same shape of the "bowler hats" I have seen before in pictures of psiloi but that may be just an artificial difference.

Edit: sorry, I did not manage to include the picture in this post (how is it done?? I tried "Img" but failed) so I edited the link to slinging.org.

I am speaking of the first picture, the slinger who dropped his chiton down to his waist.

Slingers tended to wear hats/caps rather than helms, the 'decoration' on this one gives me the impression it could be skin...although the shape resembles a slightly more rounded Pilos..which would have been felt.

Usually slingers were recruited from the "working class". Mostly mountain dwellers and hunters. A felt or a straw hat would be available.
A succesful battle or even skrmishing and raiding could increase the possibilty of item aquisition through looting.
It is not unlikely that the slingers of the "Myrrioi" would be better armored than others.
Here you will see a red felt cup from Central Greece.

Hope it helps you
Kind regards

Go for the hat - it's cheaper, and it will emphasise the difference between your character and the hoplites.
