Connolly\'s Greece and Rome at war new edition! - Gaius Julius Caesar - 01-18-2007

Well, I have just ordered the new version of this book from Military & Aviation Bookclub! I hope there are enough new items in it to make the expense worthwhile? The one I have is great! 8)

Byron, do you happen know if there is any new material compared to my -98 edition?

Re: Connolly\'s Greece and Rome at war new edition! - Gaius Julius Caesar - 01-18-2007

Well, according to the write up it has new material! Mine is the '98 edition too! Could have sworn I bought it a lot longer ago than that!
But anyway, I am hoping it will have new items of interest! The 98 is great!

Yes, it is great! It is a beautiful book just for the illustrations only. I wish there were more books like that of ancient history in general. Can you please make a short "review" when you have the book?

Re: Connolly\'s Greece and Rome at war new edition! - Dan Diffendale - 01-18-2007

This was discussed a while back in this thread.

A summary:

Quote:"It's a lot cheaper!"
"Aside from an extra preface by Goldsworthy (it doesn't replace Scullard's), the Samnites section has been revised and the Caudine Forks painting reworked. I don't think there is anything else new. The pagination remains the same but the Samnites section is substantially different."

"Greenhill claim that it's a "new revised edition", but the only substantial alteration appears to be the eight-page section on the Samnites. (btw The Caudine forks painting is the same one, but cropped more generously this time around. -- It is the same painting, but some of the equipment in the scene has been changed and the 'banners' have become tunics hung from the Samnites' spears as spoils. The changes are neatly done but it hardly justifies buying the new ed.

Strictly speaking, the 1998 version was just a reprint of the 1981 original (although, again, Greenhill claimed that it was "reprinted with revisions"). The only "revisions" that I could see were in the bibliography, which included some newer works (and omitted some works which were expected in 1981 but which never appeared).

I suspect Greenhill included the Goldsworthy introduction as a marketing device. But, quite frankly, a book of this quality doesn't need any sweeteners to ensure that it sells. Books on ancient warfare don't come much better than this one."

And despite all the apparent Samnite changes, I've yet to lay my hands on one of these babies...

I've had a look and there is one that seems to match the description on pg 22. It seems to be greek hoplites fighting Persian Immortals?
