Where do you get your military history books? - Praefectusclassis - 04-22-2007 Hi all, Another Ancient Warfare related question: which bookstores (actual, real world stores you can walk into) do you recommend for getting your military history books? Re: Where do you get your military history books? - Tarbicus - 04-22-2007 In London; Foyles on Charing Cross Road, Motor Books (the military shop to the left) just off St. Martins Lane next to the Salisbury pub. http://www.foyles.co.uk/foyles/index.asp http://www.motorbooks.co.uk/ Sorry, not answering the question, but worth jotting down anyway: On the web; Oxbow, Heritage Marketing and Publications (especially for articles and papers), and British Library Direct. http://www.oxbowbooks.com/home.cfm/Location/Oxbow http://www.archaeology.co.uk/directory/ ... 2&soc=1043 http://direct.bl.uk/bld/Home.do It's also worth keeping an eye on Caliver Books on the web: http://www.caliverbooks.com/ And of course, Ebay, which turns up some very hard to get gems from time to time, at very reasonable prices (three Caerleon lectures this week). Re: Where do you get your military history books? - FAVENTIANVS - 04-22-2007 Collector books: Pau Claris, 168 - 08037 Barcelona. Re: Where do you get your military history books? - Praefectusclassis - 04-22-2007 Thanks! I'll see who we can convince to carry Ancient Warfare magazine. Re: Where do you get your military history books? - Tarbicus - 04-22-2007 Quote:Thanks! I'll see who we can convince to carry Ancient Warfare magazine.I'll wander into both and ask if they'll be stocking it, as it sounds like it's gonna be great and the brochure was brilliant   Re: Where do you get your military history books? - Chuck Russell - 04-22-2007 in the usa book stores are becomeing rare unless its a big name, small used or nudie books. the small used usually only carry soft backs and are far and few inbetween. the big stores i mean like borders or barns n noble or walden. ask Primvs Pavlvs about the nudie book stores, i dont go there Re: Where do you get your military history books? - Praefectusclassis - 04-22-2007 Hi Chuck, Wouldn't there be specialist bookstores in really big cities? Book shops - Decebalus - 04-22-2007 Hi Jasper! I`m shure this shop would be interested to have "Ancient Warfare Magazin" on stock: "Preussisches Bücherkabinett"&"Berliner Zinnfiguren" Knesebeckstr. 88 10623 Berlin Germany Tel. (004930)3157000 Fax (004930)31570077 Email<> http://www.zinnfigur.com Greets, Decebalus/Andreas Gagelmann Re: Where do you get your military history books? - Caballo - 04-22-2007 And if you are in Oxford, Oxbow books have a walk in real bookshop as well (and wonderful it is too). Blackwells in Oxford and London are also good. Jasper- I've noticed in London that the Borders opposite Foyles often stocks relatively obscure archaeology and ancient history magazines. Worth asking them- could give wide circulation in UK and USA? And in France, virtually every town carries in its magazine rack ancient history and archaeology magazines- for example Pretorien , published by LCV. Not a patch on what Ancient Warfare will be like!! Re: Where do you get your military history books? - Narukami - 04-22-2007 Unlike Europe, or even New York City, independent or specialty book stores here in LA are disappearing at a rapid rate. However, there is a "hobby" shop here in Burbank that carries not only a wide range of games and game supplies (board, miniature, card etc.) but also a fairly good selection of new and used books on military history. They have a loyal client base and actually get a lot of traffic from the film studios. This store might be interested in the Ancient Warfare Journal. The Last Grenadier 820 North Hollywood Way Burbank, Ca 91505 Of course, in a city (megalopolis) the size of Los Angeles there must be other book stores that favor military or historical titles, but I'm at a loss to name them. Perhaps Forum members who live in the OC and San Diego area might write in with more stores -- I believe there are more down in their area. Narukami Re: Where do you get your military history books? - Caballo - 04-22-2007 Another couple of thoughts for advertising. How about posting on the wargames sites, e.g. -Ancmed , the forum for the Society of Ancients http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/ancmed/ -The Miniatures Page http://theminiaturespage.com/ - Some of the manufactures, such as Wargames Foundry, or Gripping Beast? Cheers Caballo Re: Where do you get your military history books? - jvrjenivs - 04-22-2007 I get most of my books from Bol.com and the following 3 specialist bookshops (first 2 has a 'real' store): -Athenaeum [url:2qdjl9uq]http://www.athenaeum.nl -Atleest [url:2qdjl9uq]http://www.atleest.nl/ -Halos [url:2qdjl9uq]http://www.halos.nl/ Re: Where do you get your military history books? - Robert Vermaat - 04-22-2007 Apart from many of the above, I also use http://www.heritagemp.com/ Re: Where do you get your military history books? - JP Vieira - 04-22-2007 Hi Jasper In Porto (North of Portugal) I buy military books at Livraria Britânica do Porto , address at Rua José Falcão, 184, 4050-315 Porto, Portugal, Fone: 223 323 930, fax: 222 008 050. It is a bookstore specializes in English language books. It has military history books, so it would be a suggestion. In other parts of the country I can mentioned the Livraria Britânica de Lisboa (Lisbon), address: R. LuÃs Fernandes, 14/8, 1200 - LISBOA, Portugal; fone: 21 342 84 72, fax: 21 347 82 09. If I find other bookstore I will send you the details Cheers JP Vieira BOOKS - Graham Sumner - 04-22-2007 Hello Jasper For local walk in bookshops I have Waterstones in Chester and Manchester but I am much more likely to buy military history books, especially Ospreys, from Ian Allan bookshop in Manchester. I bought 'The last Legionary' there last week! I doubt I would have seen that on the shelf in either of the local Waterstones branches. I used to like going into Borders in York as they also stock the American military and archaeological magazines which Waterstones do not. Graham. |
