Late Roman/Sarmatian/Hunnic/Gothic Saddle - RobHarbottle - 05-09-2007
Hi all,
I'm about to start reconstructing a Late Roman Saddle.
I've got some vague references, a couple of artists’ impressions and the usual unworkable theories :lol: but nothing concrete. I've googled, visited libraries, contacted museums and spoken to other re-enactment groups. Everyone has an idea of what these things look like but no-one can back-up their ideas with evidence or archaeological finds. :roll:
So is there anyone out there who can help??? :?
I'm looking for pictures of finds attributed to this type of saddle, references in texts or even impressions on statues, grave steles, triumphal arches etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes I'm interested too in a Late Sarmatian impresion about 4-5th c A.D.
I took these 5th c AD illustration from Ian Heath, & did some paint on it.
Its a Light (Alan)Cavalryman.
It say in late time the Sarma/Alans were subject of some caucasian peoples, Asiatics & Georgian, Huns etc... so their horse armor may had looked the same as those peoples
It sed after 5th c AD their close change so little, & fought as infantrymen.

I have and had the same problem finding archaeological evidence for late roman saddles, no pictures is the biggest problem.
When i read about an excavation width horse gear(mostly early medieval),in the netherlands, sometimes a probable saddle is mentioned.
Being made of wood,leather and horse hair only, nothing is found back accept the metal parts.
No bone or other parts,as far as i know off, found what could lead to a reconstruction.
The closest are the saddle parts from Krefeld Gellep and Mainz.
The biggest question is, is it saddle width or without horns or is it a saddle like the steppe saddles.

Yes, all my Piazza Armerina pictures come from website exploration.
The St Germain en Laye Museum "arçeau de selle de cavalerie" is dated to the late IVe century AD (hunnish style?)
The Kanakale funeral relief is dated to the late IIIe century AD.
Of course, the Piazza Armerina picture is dated to the late IIIe century AD - early IVe century AD.

Are there any good pictures,drawings discriptions around of the saddles and horse tack found in the kurgans?
Are there any remains (pictures, fresco's)found of saddles and horse tack from Dura Europos ?
Ok different periods but may give an idea about development and regional difenrences.
