Folding Knife by Len Morgan - sulla felix - 06-08-2007

Finally got round to taking a picture of this beautiful piece made by Len Morgan. Not sure of the details regarding the artefact which Len based this on but I am sure somebody out there can help with that info (Peronis?).

Thats a lovely piece, what are the dimensions?

I haven't seen this particular design before, but clasp knives are reasonably common finds.

The handles (afaik) are usually bone, ivory or antler. The example found in the Severan fortress at Carpow, for instance, had no surviving handle (PDF of report here, see item 17 on pp. 555/556 = 75/76). A bronze handle would probably be rather prestigious.

Clasp knifes with a bronze 'dog and hare' handle were quite common I believe. I have one of these made by Len Morgan.

You may want to contact Holger Ratsdorf. He makes several types of folding knives, from the dog head knife to a "naughty" knife.

Re: Folding Knife by Len Morgan - sulla felix - 06-21-2007

OK thanks for the pictures and posts guys. I found a nice reproduction by Nodge Nolan of a gladiator type clasp knife based on an example found at Piddington Roman Villa in UK:

Also Jef an example of the hare and hound, along with other types:

Where can I get this? Do you know the price right now?

Thank you!

Re: Folding Knife by Len Morgan - Peroni - 06-21-2007

I can get you one! They are £80.00 GBP.

There's one of Nodges replicas next to the original piece in the British Museum!

Re: Folding Knife by Len Morgan - Mark Headlee - 06-21-2007

Adrian,

Does Nodge have a web site or email? (I may have asked you before but I lost all my old correspondence in a recent computer crash!)

Re: Folding Knife by Len Morgan - Peroni - 06-21-2007

Nodge does not have a website but a lot of his items are available through mine! Look in the belts components and accessories sections.

Re: Folding Knife by Len Morgan - sulla felix - 06-22-2007

This one seems to have a chain for attaching to a belt/tunic/other to avoid loss?

Re: Folding Knife by Len Morgan - Martin Moser - 06-22-2007

Hi Barry,

thanks for those interesting pieces. Do you happen to have bibliographical references for those as well, perhaps?

Re: Folding Knife by Len Morgan - Crispvs - 06-23-2007

In answer to Duncan's post above, Len took the design, along with the designs for several others, including one very similar to the erotic handle that Holger produces, from a catalogue of metal detector finds, which I also have a copy of.

Hi Martin,

Some of them I do:

(See picture Below)

The Piddington Villa Knife (recon by Nodge Nolan) appears in the magazine Current Archaeology 182.
