Shield leather edging

Is there any evidence of nailed shield leather edging instead of sewn?

As far as I know, not. The Dura shields are sewn, and so were the shields described by Goethert. Same for the Kasr-el-Harit shield. And none of them used leather, it is all rawhide / "parchment".

Look at:

T. Dickinson and H. Härke, Early Anglo-Saxon Shields (London, 1992).

K.-P. Goethert, “Neue römische Prunkschildeâ€Â
Christian K.

No reconstruendum => No reconstruction.

Ut desint vires, tamen est laudanda voluntas.

Is there any other way to obtain rawhide instead of fake dog bitting bone?

I was in the British museum yesterday, taking a look at the Qasr Ibrahim Roman finds from Egypt.

One of the finds is described as a laminated wood object -"may be a shield fragment"- with hide/ leather covering, and metal studs holding it togther. Its a small fragment, and I'm not convinced that it is from a shield (although the construction has some similarities).

Other finds there include one of the only two extant fletched Roman arrows (the other being from Dura Europas). I've asked for a photo and more info (eg tough to tell through the glass if it is reed or wood), and I'll post a comparison with my personal conclusions when received.

Cheers

PB

Thanks Comerus and Caballo!!

Another question: What's the process of turning the skin into rawhide? Drying it? Salting it?
