Just a dumb question,please. Why is fourteen sometimes
written XIIII and other times XIV. Is the last one more modern?
(a bit OT,sorry) but I've been wondering.

Yes, you're right. Setting the numeral fourteen as "XIV" is a modern thing. The Romans themselves didn't follow such strict rules, so sometimes you'll see XIIII and other times XIV.

Wow, that's the best photo of the vexillum I've seen.
In books authors tend to show it as a drawing (to enhance the details I suppose ?)

I'd like to know how the flag ended up in Russia of all places :o
(I suspect the Soviets looted it from a German museum after WWII)
