Hey, wait a minute! That dog doesn't look like the Wardogs on Rome, Total War! I think we need to convene an Authenticity Council of Wise Fussy Critics to rant endlessly on the archeological evidence supporting or denying the center post buckle on Dogmentata.
I know RTW is not wrong on this, because those dogs work well with a cavalry backup, and we all know that Romans used cavalry as a backup, and that the dogs still fight on when their handlers are out of earshot. (And ooooh do they eat up falxmen and naked fanatics!)

Salve,

Believe it or not, an excavation at an Anglo Saxon site in Suffolk somewhere dug up a number of carefully buried dog skeletons, which were aparrently the same in size and shape as the Staffie (the dog-model above). Maybe there is something in the choice of mut afterall!

There is a set of dog armor at the Higgins in Worchester, MA. It's Renaissance I think but for a smaller dog, like a beagle, and not a mastif.

Personally, I'm holding out hope for the war budgie!!!

So this is what the Roman War Dog looked like... Smile
I'm pretty sure we'll be seeing a war dog modification for RTW inspired by this picture to be created in the near future.

And Caesar's spirit, ranging for revenge,
With Ate by his side come hot from hell,
Shall in these confines with a monarch's voice
Cry 'Havoc,' and let slip the dogs of war;

Er, in this case, wouldn't it be "...let slip the PUPS of war?"

Actually it's Worcester MA, no H. And pronounced "Woostah" - Mass'ers don't pronounce our "R's"Big Grin

We do indeed have this armor on display, it's currently in the entrance lobby. I don't remember the date, I'll check next time I'm there, although I suspect it is Renaissance, 1500-1600 era.

We've affectionately named him "Helmutt", and it is a Beagle.

actually, here's a picture of him from the Museum website:
[url:2pmp1x0b]http://www.higgins.org/Research/hunting.shtml[/url]

...as the quote says, 16th century - reconstruction

When he was in what was the Hunting Gallery (now under renovation), there was a picture of a hunting scene showing a Boar hunter on horseback with a boar-spear and hunting dogs/boarhounds with padded jackets (brigantine?)

If we could get a nickle for each time someone thought he was a "war dog", we'd have a very nice budget Tongue wink:
