Salvete,
I've seen a lot of reenactors wearing a balteus with domed apron discs. Is there any evidence the Romans actually used these?

Yes Jef.
There's a complete apron strap that survives with heavily domed studs from Vindolanda. (see Feugere's 'Weapons of the Romans p.180)
See also Mike Bishop's article on the military apron.

Thats correct. They are actually very small, brass or oriculum, same material as the squamata remains from Vindolanda, sans leather obviously..... too bad couldn't take pictures.

Quote:I have found a medieval re-enactor dealer, who makes some studs probably very close to some roman exemplars:

You make a slit for each prong, push them through and bend them over. I tried them for my first cingulum, and found that they looked OK from the the front but if the back of the apron straps was seen, then it looked very modern.

I'm wondering how the ones from Vindolande were attached to the straps...

Just a suggestion, but how about soldering a piece of brass bar on to the back, having first snipped off the offending prongs?
