Legion XXII
#1
Avete,

My name is Tiberius Claudius Geracius. If anyone is looking to join a Legion based out of Cincinnati OH please contact me at

[email protected]

Legion XXII has an open door policy. As long as you are serious about reenacting, enjoy history, and like to play with sharp objects the drop me a line.

Geracius

P.S. Please title your email something along the lines of Rome so that I can better sort out all the emails. Have a nice day.

I heard that Deks had gone Celt.

No Deks is still the primary contact. I am simply trying to see if other people were out there who wanted to join.

For the Lafe event we are going Celt/Germanian. Its the same story every year. 50 Romans Vs 4 Celts I wonder who is going to win that fight. So this year we were going down as Celts to help even the odds and make the event a lot more interesting. Think about a Civil War event where you have 1000 Union reenactors and only 50 Confederates the event will stink. That is just an example. Someone has to play the other side.

I suggested and campaigned for that 2 or 3 years ago, and had my ears thoroughly pinned back, and was nearly crucified for my trouble. I got hit hard by both "Celts" and "Romans". Glad to see that people are wising up to the truth of the idea.

There's a reason that the US military has a huge OPFOR department. Naturally, their goals are different, and they play with better toys, but --

Well, there's no reason why some "romans" couldn't switch sides...I mean, what do they need for gear?

Not a whole lot different. If you have a NF hasta, it should work for either side. If you have a NF gladius/spatha, you should be able to use that, too. If you have braccae, they'll work, even if they might not be the exact same style as Celt/Germanic.

The tunics were certainly not the same as Roman. The body was much closer fitting, and they generally went to mid thigh after belting. Belts lacked the "apron dangles". Wider belts might be found on Germanics than typical Roman ones. But not all of them. (Check out the Vicus site, and you'll see what they use, and what works for British Celts will certainly work for British Celts, seems to me.) Long sleeves were the norm, with more color varations expected...plaids, stripes, checks, and solids all were known. If weather permits, not wearing a tunic is perfectly acceptable for battle dress (at least it would be around here), and if it's cold, wrap a blanket around more or less like a sagum, and omit the tunic. All the more area to paint if you wish to.

The only thing that really is needed that is a big project is one of the various kinds of shield, and fortunately, a) they're a lot easier to make than a scutum and b) there's still plenty of time to make one. They're flat!
