Hi all, I am a bladesmith, and looking for books that show and talk about real roman weapons, specificly Swords and/or daggers.

I have found quite a few "hollywood" versions of them, but im more interested in the actual weapons.
Thank you kindly!
An excellent book about Roman military equipment including swords and daggers is "Roman Military Equipment" by M. C. Bishop and J. C. N. Coulston. It covers the period from the Punic Wars to the late Roman Empire, discussing the actual equipment, armor, weapons, etc, and with excellent drawings. It also has a chapter on production and technology.
Well worth the read, and hopefully will give you much of what you are looking for.

My copy was published in 1993 ISBN0713466375. You may be able to get a copy, if it is no longer attainable any other way, through interlibrary loan. I highly recommend it as a worthy addition to your personal library if you can buy it.
It will be reprinted and sold by Oxbow Books Ltd, www.oxbowbooks.co.uk , in the near future. The principal author, Mike Bishop, is a member here and may be able to clarify the date.
The emphasis falling on the 'may'... We're hoping to have it ready for the Christmas stockings of 2004.
Hi Mike,

Will it just be a reprint or have you added something new to make us buy it again?
It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.

It is a complete rewrite (some sections - like the Archaeological Sources, Republican, and Antonine - have been expanded, others drastically altered) with all the illustrations redone (I now work in digital rather than ink on drawing film, and many of the figures will change slightly or even completely). A couple of years ago I produced a coloured printout for Coulston with the the stuff that stayed the same in black, additions in blue, deletions in red - there was very little black!). Naturally, the references and bibliography have all been (and continue to be) updated.
Hmmm, I think I'd better as well. Are Oxbow the same as the British Museum regarding 'vapourware' orders, where your order and credit card details are kept on record until the order can finally be dispatched, or do you have to order when it becomes available and thus risk missing out?
When you see it advertised in their catalogue (or on their website) then by all means order it, but not until then ;-)
I am going to have to get the updated version as well! I will keep an eye on the David Brown Book Company here in the USA (Oxbow's US Outlet) for when they offer it.
It's great to see publishing of new and revised books such as this as more and more finds add to our knowledge.
Keep up the great work, Mike.
