Ok gang, I'm getting ready to order a gladius, and I pretty much have made up my mind which type I plan to buy. However, before I do, I would like to hear from you which style you have chosen and why: a Pompeii blade? Or a Mainz blade? :cheer:

What time period do you wanna portray. The pompeii type is a later one compared to the mainz types blade

Sorry. Our group represents life in the late 1st Century, AD.

I prefer the Mainz which would still be in use in the 1st century!
However, the pompiensis was in use by the mid 1st century!

Personally, I'm going with a Mainz. I just like the design of the blade compared to the Pompeii. My son is undecided.

As you have added your birthday to your profile, I think you can well portray a grizzled and battle hardened veteran who still yields the cherished sword of his younger years. So the Mainz would be perfectly fitting
Before you buy one, though, you may want to ask advise on which manufacturer offers the most accurate one for a decent price.

And which manufacture would that be? Any thoughts, Robert?
As for the old and grizzled look, that is exactly what I'm shooting for.

No, sorry, I have not delved into that type of sword yet, so gladly leave the judgement/advice on which manufacturer makes the least inaccurate "off the shelf" version of those swords to others more knowledgable of this period, like Jvrjenivs :-).

The Imperium ANcient Armory rates the Deepeeka 2005 Mainz Gladius at a 9.75 out of 10 for accuracy. It is a wider blade and scabbard though.

I would tend to distrust unsupported vendor claims on authenticity. I would imagine a Matt Lukes gladius rates that sort of figure, as he is very into accuracy, but I very much doubt Deepeeka or any other Indian manufacturer will achieve anywhere near that rating at present.

Furthermore I wouldn't see why a Mainz type gladius would be inappropriate for an officer?
