I dunno, Sean, that still sounds way overweight to me, by 30 to 40 pounds. Haven't weighed all my own stuff, though. Lorica 15 pounds, helmet 4 pounds, scutum with cover about 15 pounds, gladius in scabbard, 2 pounds, belt with pugio maybe 3 pounds, pila total 4 pounds. Three days' food won't be more than 8 pounds. The cloak, furca, satchel, spare clothes, cleaning gear, patera, water, ONE tool (how many hands you got?), etc., shouldn't double that. Skip the palisade stakes, I'd say, no real proof that they were a regular part of the load.

I'll have to weigh a few more things, though!

Matt, we were surprised too.

Our segs tend to weigh 20 - 22lbs
We use the larger scutum so ours weigh in at 20ish lbs

Hib - What's a Lodix? And what do you use for dice?

I'd agree with Matt that the valli/sudes stakes would probably be thrown on the Mule, if not cut and made at the campsite from area timber

Matt - Isn't there a mention from Vegetius that says soldiers were required to carry not only the dolabra, but also one other tool? (shovel, mattock, sledgehammer, barkstripper/turfcutter, et cetera), although the extra tool or two from the group maybe could have been put on the mule as well...?

It's Josephus, and he has each man carrying one of EVERYthing. No need. In an 8-man contubernium, having 2 each of 4 tools (dolabra, shovel, e-tool, turf-cutter) is plenty.

Ah, I figured that was part of it, Sean. Still going too thick on your armor and shields, eh? Well, it's your spine...

"When in doubt, throw it out!" (Actually, that was my father's mantra when he was trying to get me to clean my room, but it never worked...)

Too thick on the armor? .. for some guys its too thick in the torso...

The range throughout the Legio is 15 lbs up to mid 20's

We have guys wearing all 20g, some all 18g, some wearing mixed 16g shoulder and 18g torsos..... seems to avg about 20lbs

The scutums are about 44-46x26-28.. they vary.
They are 3 ply... 1/8th inch each ply

The new ones of cross laminated strips are going to come out the same weight.. 20 lbs or so....

"So, would your licora stand up to a sword/spear hit?"

Not those made with plain ol'mild steel

Thise that have been hammered and tempered are very durable, less prone to punctures, creases etc

The iron plates I've been working on are even tougher... more resistant.
