Gondor = Byzantium?

Quote:As far as I'm concerned, HP is a fairy-tale that deals with loyalty and other issues amongst teens, nothing more. Yes, I've heard all the concerns of parents, but then there were once also very serious allegations directed against the bad influence of the Teletubbies. Apparently they were nazis or promoting gay relationships. No, I'm not kidding.

Dead on!

And a laudes for the Teletubbies image. That nearly made me fall off the couch laughing. LOL.

Silence Philistines!!

Here's the decree from on high...

Conan:
Original Robert Howard stories: Brilliant and vastly underrated.
Ah-nuld Conan movies. Camp.
Both are examples of high art for their genre in my book.

Harry Potter:

When was the last time any author, fantasy or otherwise took three kids from childhood to adulthood with all the important issues about life?

mmmmm. none.

Verdict. They will be reading this when James Joyce is a trivial pursuit question and nothing more.

LOTR:

Timeless.

Narnia:

NOT a Christian allegory. Christian fantasy.

The difference? One is a parable with a moral, the other speculative fiction. Aslan is not a metaphor for Christ. He IS Christ, as imagined in an alternate universe. This is clear in several passages, especially "The Final Battle" "A Horse and his Boy" and "Voyage of the Dawn Treader"

That makes it radical, and nearly heretical. Of course I admire heresy...

I have spoken.

Yes, and I even think his sucessors have been able to imitate his style flawlessly (or almost)

Books ? I wouldn't know. TV ? The Wonder Years

I see. Thank you for correcting me, Travis. I read it in second grade and haven't seen the new movie

Sure, I thought it was clearly inferior anyway - a Lion :?:

Quote:BTW, did Narukami change his post after learning that Conan WAS set in prehistoric times ? Smile

No, I changed nothing.

I was always under the impression that Conan was set "in the before times" and agree with TLC, high camp and most amusing.

As for reading the HP books -- my younger brother tells me the same thing. Perhaps I will, but right now my shelves as full of other books that cry out for attention.

And Narnia...the film was very disappointing. LOTR lite. Again the books are no doubt better, but the film... Cry

As Kurt Vonnegut once said, only two books have been better on film than in print -- Margret Mitchell's Gone With The Wind, and his own Slaughterhouse Five.

I'm not sure that I agree with him for I have enjoyed Slaughterhouse Five each time that I have read it.

Kurt's right.

Also on that list is Carl Sagan's "Contact". Much better movie than book.
