Apulo-Corinthian plume holder shape
#1
I often see the plume holders on repro Apulo-Corinthian helmets as tubes for a feather to fit inside. But, the photos I've seen of actual plume holders on excavated helmets are flat, as if the feathers would be tied to the outside. Anyone know why hollow tubes are made for modern repros?

I'll also add that the added iron plume holders for montefortinos seem to be solid, again as is the feathers were tied to the outside.

Could these flat side tabs be a fastening point for a transverse crest?

The third photo has holes in the flat tabs which could be used for such a fitting

I think on the third one it's a distinct possibility. The stubs are short and the 'clips' on top of the bowl would make a good attachment for a two-pronged crest holder (the prongs slotting into the clips). However, the other two don't have holes and are very tall. Given the apparent solidity of the montefortino plume holders, I'd suggest these were a more easily constructed method for attaching feathers by tying them on using thread, or some such. the tallness of the pieces would be excellent for securely holding long feathers.

More examples of plume and crest holders on these helmets (not one has a hollow tube, but most would certainly accept a crest):

We do see hollow tubes on these Chalcidian helmets (at least I think the second one does):

It's possible there were holders that slipped over the tabs.

Why, when you could just tie an 18" feather to it?

Why not when you could mount it in a nice little bronze or silver sheath?
And change it at will.

The sheath could come off, unless you.... tied it on.

Yes, but it will look nicer than a plain feather tied on...... Smile or it could be a pin or spring lock thing.....
