Salvete,
Does anyone know who makes a boss for a republican scutum ? You know, the one that has the wooden(?) spinae. I can make the rest of it
but I have no experience making an umbo.
Any help would be appreciated.

I see he calls most of what I would think of as a republican boss as celtic!
I assume that is because they were the same?
I was looking for a good source of boss pictures!!
Just need the wooden umspina to go with it.....

You'll have trouble attaching that to a curved shield though...
Just a word of caution. The geometry of the "dome" makes it difficult to fit the radius of the platform. A blacksmith could fix it for you, but one willing to do that could just make the boss with a curved backing in the first place.
Consider the "Roman scutum umbo front view" and note that the side parts of the "bowl" are longer at the sides, than at the middle.

Well, now that I have found a small anvil, and a blow torch, I could possibly try to shape it myself...... :roll: will see how the pilum goes first!

Yes. The umbo will be of bronze, and it will have "D" shaped openings at top and bottom to accept the wooden spina that will run top-to-bottom.
