I don't specialise in the area, but can recommend "The Beginnings of Rome, 753-264 B.C." by Tim Cornell as a good read. His bibliography will take you further into the subject.

Good luck with that one, I think it's probably a really interesting period. I know I'm enjoying looking at 2nd Punic War and sloooowly getting the gear together.

A good start could be the Osprey title: Early Roman Armies

For a really good work of fiction on Rome from its inception through to Augustus, you could do worse than Steven Saylor's Roma. Although I'm sure there are those that would 'sniff' at it, I loved the way it portrays the Romans from their salt trader roots, and the major events of its development up to Empire. Much of the novel deals with the kings, Romulus and Remus, plebeian secession, the Gallic sack of Rome (a very funny episode in that chapter), etc, etc.

Also to either buy or track down in the library:
Early Rome, from the foundation of the city to its destruction by the Gauls
The Beginnings of Rome: Italy From the Bronze Age to the Punic Wars (Circa 1,000 to 264 B.C.)
A Critical History of Early Rome: From Prehistory to the First Punic War
Early Rome and the Etruscans
