Salvete Romani!
On behalf of the ISPA and The Legionaries and Supporters of Legio VI Ferrata Fidelas Constans would like to formally invite you to our
eighth annual Castra Romana, November 13, 14, and 1 5, 2009. This event will be held at Givhans State Park in South Carolina. Thirty minutes from Charleston, Givhans gives us an excelllent near anachronism free site. Additionally, after seven years, the Rangers allow us a lot of freedom as we have built a serious trust with them!
Any ancient re-enactors, Romans, Barbarians, Gladiators, and Civilians are invited! Vendors too! We have several new things. The Legion Engineer Kent Nillson has complete his PLUTEUS (I suspect the first in the western hemisphere) and added to his engineering impression. Children will be taught how to weave rope at the engineer station. We also have a great Medici impression by Paul Silva. We have a homemade candy vendor and bookseller this year, as well as professional photography. The feast hall is now bigger and kids have a seperate feast to insure our adult sanity!
While this event will be advertised and open to the public, our primary goal is to provide a unique experience to our participants. To this end we have a great number of events which will interest the Roman Reenactor, be they soldier or civilian! If you have a unique impression you would like to bring and add, please contact us. The last years have been an outstanding success, and this year will be even better!
Soldiers will get the opportunity to drill and train the new SOTS system, throw live pila on the pila range, practice live sword (against a post of course!), fire the BEAST Scorpio, collect taxes from the public, and you will see the Gladiators in the arena in daylight, and participate in the LORICATUS. The Loricatus is a "best in kit" contest for those seeking constructive criticism. Judges will assess your kit and impression, grade you, offer suggestions for improvement, and finally award several prizes to the best! See the castraromana.com website for details of the LORICATUS.
The highlight of the event will be the Centurios Convivium, a grande Roman Banquet and hosted by the Centurio. Ask anyone about our feast! The food alone is worth the drive! This year the menu includes: Cream cheese & garic spread, olive relish, Squash in rosemary sauce, Turnips in cumin sauce, carrots with cumin sauce, Bread Salad,Peas with leeks in basil wine sauce, onion Relish, mushrooms, eggs in wine sauce, stuffed chicken squash and apricots, fish with shallots, roast goose, lamb, roast pork, beef, shrimp, stuffed rabbit, roman custard and peppered sweet cakes. We'll also celebrate Legio VI Centurio's XXXX birthday as well as his daughter Falvia Secunda's XVIII.
We have about twenty sets of complete loaner gear that we just rebuilt and repaired, so bring your new recruits or interested persons! A great opportunity to dress out with no cost besides gas.
Average Temperature in November in South Carolina is 65-75 degrees. In addition there are few if any events on the calendar for that period of time. Plus the mosquitos are mostly dead!
Legio VI will be onsite Thursday the 14th to Monday the 19rd, but you should try to arrive sometime Thursday or Friday unless you are setting up a special event or station. Anyone who can help with setup thursday and friday will be fed by the Legion! Come early and hang out!
Re-enacting events start Friday afternoon with drill practice.
Vendors are welcome to set up a display, but we ask that they remain in period as much as they are able, and you must contact us as soon as possible. We have limited room for vendors, but will endeavor to accommodate you in the period market, or vendor row. Please RSVP via EMAIL by November 1st with firm numbers if atall possible (this is so we can plan the feast).
It is our sincerest hope you will plan to attend. We will have an excellent time, and want you to be there to celebrate the growth ofRoman Living Archeology, at the best Castra Romana EVER!
Ave!
