Probably the shield was strapped to the arm. At least we know that method was known in the period, and later (smaller round) cavalry shields indeed were used that way. (At least that is the way I'm planning on using my shield on horseback)

I can see his hand in the shield grip in the picture, I think the reins are in his hand too.

That would mean the shieldgrip is mounted vertical, would it not. Thought about that. Any evidence, anyone?
