Robert why is this post in violation of rule 4? When the provenance is listed, but the late ridge helm on another thread is OK even though the only provenance is that it has come from a german private collection?

Sorry just curious this is an interesting helmet but as the post is edited there is no infomation to disscuss apart form some nice pictures.

IIRC, this was auctioned last year from the Guttmann collection in London, and these pics are from the catalogue?

Cheers

Yes I was overzealous - I realised the mistake only after the edit was done. Yes, it's from the \\Guttman collection, and therefore not to be treated as a common eBay page. Even so, the Guttmann stuff is (afaik) not bought from museums, but from gtraders, was it not? I already apologised to Conal about my rashness.

You're wrong, btw, I included all the text from the page, so you've not missed anything.

Sorry my bad I assumed that there was more than I was seeing

That OK, I'm proud to be part of a community that can admit making the odd mistake now and then

Now to start the ball rolling I am a self confessed know little/nothing on the subject of Cavalry Helmets but I would like to know what differentiates this one from a 1stC helmet what is the basis for a late2nd/early 3rdC date was it context or is there something in the design?

Just to add a litte about this particular helmet. The shape is somewhat hypothetical as the helmet was not much more than a small box full of broken bits when Guttmann aquired it. Much of the helmet was missing and as far as I know, when it was reconstructed it was made to conform to a known shape, with the addition of a lot of replacement material to make up for what had not survived. Although some of the pieces showed the curvature at certain points much of what we are seeing in the picture must be based on assumption. I have a copy of Junkelmann's book on the helmets in Guttmann's collection but unfortunately my half forgotten schoolboy German is not really up to the task of achieving a good understanding of Herr Dr Junkelmann's text.
