trip to Scotland
#1
Salve,

We are planning a holiday to Scotland this summer. On the way we also want to spent several days at Hadrians wall. Does someone has suggestions for nice places/ museums etc at Hadrians wall and Scotland? Thanks in advance!

I'bver never yet managed to get to Hadrian's Wall (would you believe it), but I highly recommend the Scottish National Museum in Edinburgh. Some interesting Roman and lots of very nice barbarian finds on display.

Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum museums NW of Hexham!
Three types of wall reconstructions and a temple, and a couple of civilian buildings reconstructions at Vindolanda, and they have an excellent book shop.

Housesteads is very interesting. South Shields is excellent with the comander's house, barracks, and gate and a museum.

Walls End has a nice museum as well as a reconstruction of a bath house.

Get a map in advance! There is a Hadrian's Wall Survey that is excellent.

Greetings,
Arbeia fort in South Shields, if you are around on the weekend of 15/16 July, members of Comitatus, Quinta (Cohors Quintae Gallorum) and friends, some of whom lurk in this forum, will be there doing their Roman thing...
It has a reconstructed gatehouse with armoury, reconstructed furnished commanders house (which is gorgeous) and very evocative furnished barracks - in situ and a small museum.

Unlike some of the other forts, it is surrounded with residential property, but just a short walk takes you to a park with a rather nice view over the Tyne.

The enemy is less likely to get wind of an advance of cavalry, if the orders for march were passed from mouth to mouth rather than announced by voice of herald, or public notice. Xenophon
