Greetings!
I picked up a metal canteen:

and was curious as to where/how it was carried. I have not run across any images of how it was carried, over the shoulder or on the marching rack.
Thanks!

Wes,
I used to have one of these canteens and they are pretty sturdy, but you may want to look at washing it out real good with dish soap and then lining it with bees wax to take out the metallic taste in it.
I just poured in melted bee's wax, put on the cap, and shook it up real good. It will also make sure that you have a near perfect seal. Just don't pour hot coffee or tea in it or anything that could go rancid like dairy products.
As Far as carrying it goes, I have only ever seen suspended from the marching kit in pictures, however, I took some leather cord and made a carrying strap for it and smaller one for the cap so I would not lose it. It worked out pretty well for me at Lafe in 2006.
On a side note, there is discussion that the canteen discovered that your's is based off of, may have been for olive oil, or some other liquid other than water, but it is all speculative.
Cheers!!,

We often hook it over the gladius and wageena
And you can draw your blade without dislodging the canteen!

I keep olive oil in mine and attach it to my marching pack.

I can't access your link from work here, but I imagine it is the Deepeeka metal one? These date from a later period, don't they?

It is the Deepeeka, I got it off of the auction site after looking at a friend of mines. I am still trying to figure out the year that it is appropriate for, and also looking into getting a terra cotta jug made, if I can motivate another friend to get back into pottery! Thanks for the input!

Wes,
I have one of the Depeeka tin ones that I use for oil as well. I hang it off my furca. I'm planning to make some strygyls to go with it. For water I use one of the long bottle-shaped clay ones made by Julia of Venetian Cat Pottery. The clay helps keep the water much cooler. She also makes round ones as well. Her stuff is really nice, and I'm not just saying that because she's a civillian member of our Legion. Her husband Dino makes macrame/netting bags to carry them in too, but I made my own.

I was going to recomend Venetian Cat, but someone has already done so! I hope to get one of her's eventually!

Picture of how we do it.
Not saying it's the right true way, but it works.
