Can anyone tell me the approximate dimensions for Sudis?
At a minimum: length, width at the largest portion of the square, and diameter of the internal handle...
Thanks in advance.

So I could chop down some of the 4" x 4" spare lumber I have lying around, which is actually only about 3.5" x 3.5" dressed.
I guess the last question is, how long do they typically run?
By the reconstructions I have seen, they looked to be about 36" or so?

As I recall, they're typically about 5 feet long, so you can't get 2 from an 8-foot piece of lumber, unfortunately. We use 2x2 lumber for ours, seems to match the slimmer originals just fine. Some were certainly bigger, but they're 4 times as much to haul around, store, etc.
I made one of mine from oak, laboriously using only hand tools--drawknife, rasp, etc. Then I made a couple from pine, with power saw and sanding disc. After a few years of getting weathered at events, I really can't tell them apart, except maybe by weight...
Some handles are that nice spindle shape you see in Connolly, etc., others are just a waisted section about 4 or 5 inches long. Don't bother being too neat, it's not precision work or fine furniture.

Our VALLI are about 48" long, vary in width though over the last few years we drifted towards narrower, and are made from oak, pine, fir, poplar, birch, ash and we have a few oddities.. one of manzanita and a couple of eucalyptus... most are fir made from 4x4 posts and lumberyard/construction site scrap.
The handles vary too: 5", 6", 7" .. some neatly carved, other crudely
We oil them... linseed oil. They live outside in the weather.
We are close to our goal of 500 and the narrower ones are lots easier to transport and set up.
Thanks Matt & Hib. I have enough to go on now ... Laudes to you both for the info!
