Greetings my name is Ash.
Im English and have recently become a so called mature student (although im only 23) ! I have always loved history especially early medieval and ancient since i was young and now get to study it. I have been reading this forum for a little while as it seems to have a wealth of information so thought i would join.
I have done a bit of late Saxon/Viking reenactment a couple of years ago but rotating shift work made it difficult so i had to leave unfortunately. Now im a student i have the time to devote but less money (bloody typical). Still i would love to get back into reenactment and especially take part in some Early Saxon/Migration period.

Hello everyone

My name is Conor and I am a reenactor with Legion Ireland. I have been a lurker for several years now, trying to soak up the knowledge of the site.
I have been interested in history in general for the last 6 or 7 years now and roman for the last 5. I found reenactment about 3 years ago and have found it to be one of the best things I have ever got into. I am especially interested in the equipment/clothing aspect of history rather than the political history.

Greetings, I am Antonio Alfredo Cardenas , I reside in the state of Michigan , U.S.A. . As you can tell from my name i am of " Latin " descent ,i have always had an interest in history , especially ancient history , and because of military tradition in my family the military history of greece and roman empire . I thought i had some small amount of knowlege about the legions from reading books i had bought over the years but from browsing this site and reading the posts of members (Matt Amt ,Dan Peterson, Jasper O.,Luke ,Bishop,) and many others , i sadly realized that i know next to nothing!! So i am here to learn everything that i can. I have found that the older generations are more likely win a fight. What they lack in physicality they make up for in knowledge. When I arm wrestle my Dad he kicks me in the knee if I start to win!!! :lol:

- do you re-enact, are you a student, an academic professional, or..? - I mainly train in martial arts and come to this site to take in the Western side of things. I like Greek Pankration and wish to delve into the history and techniques more.

Other than that I like talking to a group of like minded individuals. I was the only person in my history class that would get into conversations with the teacher. Though the Asian cultures are more researched by me I have always been interested in my heritage as well. I call myself a European Mutt most of the time.

Hi all - or should that be salvete? My Latin is terribly rusty!

I'm Lindsay, a primary school teacher from Wales, but going back to university next year to do my MA in the archaeology and history of Greece and Rome. My first degree was in archaeology and try as I might, I just can't seem to go into any other career I'd love to get into re-enacting, as one of my main interests is historical costume, although I'd rather be a soldier than a camp woman any day. I like to try ancient techniques for sewing, spinning and dyeing (and the odd bit of cookery!) and my next big project will be weaving, though that's a while off yet.

I've joined the site to learn, but also to share my own knowledge, such as it is. I would like to get involved if there are any groups vaguely near Mid Wales!

Hello. Finally got round to finishing my registration since February so thought I would come and introduce myself...been interested in all things Roman military since falling desperately in love with Terence Longdon who played Drusus in Ben Hur (wont give my age away but I was very young LOL ) . Then got into Greek military history via Roderick Milton's splendid novel 'Tell Them in Sparta' based on the Persian Wars. Did Ancient History as a degree as a result specialising in military history in my last year, notably the Year of the Four Emperors (AD69)...which is why Gaius Julius Vindex is my hero...was an archaeologist...listened to Mother's advice and joined the Army for a 'proper' job (!)...and now returning to my trowel after dum de dum years.

Always been interested in all things cavalry...have a retired polo pony to experiment on but not a member of any re-enactment groups as I haven't had the time to commit so far...

Have to say I'm very impressed with a lot of the threads on this Forum and the amount of knowledge and research...I can see that I am going to have to regulate my attendance! The one on horse ornaments is particularly interesting...must just pop back there before my hour is up!

Hello all. I am thrilled to find a forum of like-minded people who share my interest in Rome and especially the Roman army. I am former military and I see so many parallels between our military today and the army of ancient Rome. I am a female and my mostly-female friends don't share my obsession, so I decided to look for people with similar interests. I think I've found 'em here!

1. I am from Colorado. But my heart is on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. And I am sure one day, when I get to visit Rome, my heart will remain there as well.

2. We studied Rome in my 9th grade social studies class. I loved that much of the world and society is still shaped, even today, by ancient Rome. I also thought the discipline displayed in Roman legions was amazing.

3. I'm here to share information and to learn from other people who, like me, should have been born in Ancient Roman times!

4. I'm currently writing a book from the perspective of a Roman soldier. This has required painstaking research. Since I know many of you re-enact and/or otherwise have an obsession with all things ancient Rome and the Roman army, I thought this would be a good place to be.

Hi Bellatrix - love the name!

Both RAT and UNRV are brilliant places to come for help with research that's for sure. One thing I'd say though is try not to become a slave to it. If its a novel you're writing, story and pace have to come first. Historians don't like it, but that's the size of it. What can happen with reams of research is that because you've done it you feel you need to put it on the page.

And that really isn't the case: research should be like a bad case of silent farting. It should permeate the writing but not be obvious that you've done it. In other words its enough that you know what you're talking about...it'll come through believe me because the research that you've done will give you the pictures in your minds eye that will come out on page.
