What you been doing over Christmas??
#1
Apart from Christmas day and Boxing day I have been rebuilding totally the top end of a lorica, I have renewed everything except the two outer shoulder plates.. They seemed ok. What an absolute F@*&%?!**!?*8&&???*** awful job getting everything to line up. Never again. Im getting a proper one in due course.
Considering the hassles Im quite pleased with it. The original curass bands are a bit narrow and the tie cleats unravel when you haul on them too much. I am replacing them as they break.
Mind you if I do replace the bands I will have built my first lorica lol Big Grin

Have you had any problems with nerves below your underarm getting pinched while wearing your segmentata? While carrying my scutum my left hand eventually becomes numb. I've never been able to fix this. I even went to the trouble of fabricating a new torso section from scratch.

For other activities, I'm spending the holidays making a pair of caligae for a friend. Presently the right boot is ready for hobnails and I'm about to start stitching together the left. I'll have pictures to share when they're done.

I've been sleeping, eating, quaffing beer and aqua vitae over these fine holidays. Oh, and working on my subarmalis and gladius. Got it almost done; unsure if it's thick enough so I'll leave the bottom unsewn to slip more padding in.

I don't think the two go together. If I read them correctly, there's more than 450 years between them.

I have been eating, drinking & reading. There`s a gargantuan amount of 5 hours of "daylight" in this time of the year here so you can imagine the batteries are a bit low  ...

I wear a light canvas 'waist coat' with leather pads on the shoulders and under the armpit. this seems to stop chaffing and numbing when wearing a summer tunic.
Im also a pikeman in the Sealed Knot (was a musketeer hence the handle) Too boring. When holding a 13 foot pike for long periods I get the same problem with fingers going numb. It seems to be quite common.

And another thing. I have had to go to a pals house today in order to scrouge 6 longer copper rivets because the ones I have will not accommodate hinges, plate leather and washers for fixing the main shoulder plate. In the book I have and according to XX Leg handbook the pointy bits on the top shoulder plates face to the NECK. My pal says he's seen them pointing OUT on stuff that is sold at reenactors markets. I think Im doing right...someone please confirm before I nail 'em on.

A scorpion, it will soon be finished! Big Grin

I'm also working on a smaller manuballista , similar to the Xanten manuballista, but with less power (my own desing!). It will be great fun to shoot even though it can't throw a long distance- maybe 70 meters?
