I'd love to. But, we would have to find a good range first. Inside the park the ground is too hard, and outside they will have built houses by now... :?

I used that in 2004. Basically, it's way too short (I had to restrain muself or else my plumbatae would overshoot) but even if you'd step back into the forum area, the ground is not soft enough - out of three plumbatae, one broke and one was very bent.

Those two pictures are impressive. The velocity of the weapons upon release is quite amazing and I am sure it could tear up a cavalry charge as long as the troops maintained their discipline in ranks.

Has anyone ever timed how fast they could snap off five in mass to get area coverage on a troop like formation.

On a more humorous note, I think I now see where the the popular outdoor toy, the "Lawn Dart" came from. Smile

Cheers!!

Three men is a s many as I ever tested with together.
No, I never tested the speed, but that completely depends on how fast you can get the plumbatae from your shield/quiver. Mine I can launch all five within 30 seconds.
The Lawn dart.. that was banned, wasn't it? Too dangerous... :?

We tried a 'barrage' during our festival last September, involving two bows, two plumbatas and two catapults at a time, but lack of training ended in a deplorable lack of synchro...

It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.

Wow, that sounds nice. Too bad we won't have artillery at Archeon, and afaik just one or two archers.

Why would you want a barrage to be synchronised?

Just to make for the scarcity of missiles. We wanted to create a small 'cloud' and to shoe the devastating effects on the targets (i.e. many darts compensate for the lack of accuracy! Tongue )

Good point, but not easy to accomplish when you'd try to synchronise is for all weapons. Maybe with trumpet (cornu, lituus) signals?

On the other hand, the front line could throw their volleys relatively 'coordinated' when most would throw on command. No, we have no idea what that command was or who was actually throwing. The front lines seem to have been far too closely together to have the room to throw their pplumbatae (overhead or underarm). Either all troops were standing much much further apart (but then how could they ever close up again - each soldier would need metres space for himself) or just the front line was throwing. I can't see a system of lines changing from back to front, running back after throwing. That would create havoc and an imbalanced front.

The best I can come up with was that possibly:

a) the front lines could throw and received ever mopre plumbatae from the ranks behind them, who would carry up to 5 in their shields, or/and

b) the light infantry would keep up a constant rate of fire from behind the lines of heavy infantry, harassing the enemy all through the engagement. They would be carrying plumbatae in leather cases/quivers.
