Good pix. I'd forgot about that whorl fibula.
What's the length on the Athens Museum pieces?

Unfortunately i really don't know. They could be rather big though. At a pure guess, around 5cm ?They are virtually unchanged from the mycenean times till today! And size certainly varied,so one can reproduce them as he needs.

Oi! I didn't realize they looked like modern safety pins. Crazy! I definitely look forward to making some of those. Thanks for the excellent photo of them.

I'm planning to make a few myself. I'm thinking of using steel welding wire (it's plated in copper). It will look like copper except for the sharpened point, but have the springiness and resilience of steel. If it works, I'll put up a picture or two. I will try the approx 5cm/2 inch, as that seems a good size for the gauge of wire.
I've had trouble finding brass wire that's at once stiff enough to have some spring, and yet soft enough to bend effectively. I'm sure there's a supplier out there that has what I need. But I have welding wire right now.

I wonder if my MIG wire will work. It's pretty stiff, and a nice, fine gauge. I'll try that first, then go for the torch welding wire. Results published some time next week. This week is getting ready for the Ren Faire outing Friday thru Sunday.

The wool looks very good to me.
About the pattern; It was normally woven into the fabric, as each piece was custom made.
As most of us couldn't afford this today I think it won't be a problem to sew the pattern onto your fabric. I have seen pictures of re-enactors who have done so.
