Outstanding pictures, Craig, the shields look great! Is one faced with brass, or is it powder-coated?

Paul

Brass faces sheild done by Manning.

Lots polishing, I am very interest to see how keep his painted design stay on with the polishing.

I suspect that the painting was often done specifically to obviate the need for polishing, although I have heard (from Stefanos) of shields on which bronze was the background colour. In a slave-based society, I imagine you could get your shield polished and the paintwork touched-up pretty frequently.

Incidentally, The British Museum is now using Manning Imperial aichmes and sauroters in its touring exhibition "Athletes, Warriors and Heroes".

Nice pictures, Kurt.
Where were the pictures taken, exactly?
And is that sarissa supposed to bend that much?

the pics where taken in Mayen/Katzenberg here in Germany. I used ash shanks for my Sarissa. I've read somwhere that the sarissa should have been bend. It was my first field experiment with the Sarissa and I've followed the Andronicos theory because it's easier to transport by car . Big Grin
