Chuck, we've got bigger boys than you in the International Brigade.
Is your helmet bronze?

Kurt, that looks like the Deepeeka aichme on your pike. Is it? I had one, but ground it down to a better shape and gave it to a big, strong lad for a Viking spear. It's much too heavy. According to Connolly ("Greece and rome at War"), sarissa aichme were quite tiny, like the Manning Dory tips.
Makes sense to me. I got a spear from Poland for £10 which has a very small, sharp head, ideal for this purpose; I must try to get some more. the counterpoise looks good, though; where did you get it?

Gioi, welcome back! The high-crested helmet is not the one you sent me, but my OTHER bronze one (Yes! I'm such a tart, I've got two!). I'm in the process of making a standard crest for the one you sent me, as well as one for my brass Corinthian. Additionally, I've finally got my Kopis, made by Matt Clatworthy, fitted with brass, so I can re-create that image of the melanochitonos which started all the madness. Oh, and I've ground down my Deepeeka Xiphos so that it looks much more elegant than in those pictures. I must get posing again...

You are right Paul it's a Deepeeka on my pike and it's to heavy. Well. according to the orgininals as I've seen in Vergina, the spearhead should have at least 40 - 50 cm. How long are yours from Poland? If they fit I will be very interested in 2 of them. I let the counterpicse made by a blacksmith here in Germany.

Well Giannis, actually the helmet is a Deepeeka "attic helmet". I let it customized by my favourite blacksmith. Painting and crest are made by myself. The pilos cap belongs to the user geala, please ask him about it.

I will be happy to meet you in Thessaloniki, but I am coming without my gear. Just vacation for my wife and myself in your fine country again. I'll pm you for the exact date when we'll be in Thessaloniki.

Gioi, I won't attempt to modify my other bronze helmet - it's a very good one in its own way and lloks great. From a practical point of view, the Indian one is better.

Kurt, you say the finds are 40-50cms? I'm amazed! I've got Andronicos's book on Vergina, are the finds in there, do you know? My Polish one is only 19cms overall, 13.5cms in the blade, but it's a nice, lanceolate shape. If Igor Gorewicz agrees to come to Sheffield, I'll ask if he can bring some.

Paul,I agree a very small point would be more practical in a sarissa, and this is what Swcunda is suggesting.Conolly shows thin and long sarissa heads. To come to the actual finds,in the Vergina museum they display those very long heads as the sarissa points. There are also many long but wider and earlier spear heads that are identified as hunting spears. The long-narrow blade looks better than the small one on the sarissa, but one would expect that they'd want to keep the point of balance near the bottom...

I've just looked again at Connolly's illustration and I see that you're right, the spearhead is a good deal longer than I remembered. Even so, I don't think it's as long, proportionate to the counterpoise, as the Deepeeka version. Neither is it as wide. I think there's scope for a substantial reduction in size and weight. Looking at Andronicos's book again, I see that he has the shortest down as 33cm, but I also note that they are more like needles than spoons!

Very nice Gioi!I imagine it painted and finished. Is it leather though? Smile
Where did you get the helm from?
