General question, maybe little off topic but is sure inspired by this whole topic, you can move it if not in right place:
Is there a particular document or quote that says that the whole shield was painted in myriads or perfectly applied colors,or that the soldier simply painted symbol ON a bronze shield...
(Notice the difference between them below).I'm asking, just for myself (not to imply anything on reenactors work, which I respect, although dislike) which is, more historically accurate(better say historically more likely)..Forgetting for a moment what you find pretty.
Also I can not help but notice that ancient decoration,if any, much more relied on relief, often very fine and complex, and natural looking..while today all decoration, and there is strange need to overdecorate everything, is done by paint:

I hope you see my point. Here are some random pictures,in the lack of better ones:

Hello. I see your point, however there are some things to consider. Firts of all,we don't know the percentage of bronze faced shields. The non bronze ones would be hide most probably, which would be painted. So you would cetainly see full coloured shields. We don't need much literally evidence since we have pictoriqal ones, but in fact there is even literally. One example, the white faced Argive shields. This doesn't have to be universal in any cased, but it certainly implies that some/many shields were painted.
Even bronze faced shields could be painted, though i tend to believe that few people would like to paint their expensive bronze! At least i wouldn't. After all, according to Xenophon one of the utilities of brnze facings was that it gets polished and cleaned easily.
And all these are related to the reason why you don't like many of the modern reconstructions. As far as i know, few shields today are covered by rawhide, and even fewer with bronze. And since many of the shields that re-enactors carry are made by themselves and not by a proffessional, their quality varries. Also,it needs devotion even for an artist to imitate precicely the ancient styles of decoration.
Howeven,in general the quality is very quickly becoming better and better. In everything, not only shields. Since the standards are getting higher,i'm sure you will find very nice impressions more and more frequently.

Stefane,i have been watching these documentaries in 2004 one month before the Olympic games. They had it in greek television. Since then i'm searching for it on the internet but couldn't find any traces of it. It was an excellent documentary involving many athletes from different countries of europe. They live for about a month in a camp and were practicing like the ancient Athletes before the olympic games.
Thanks much polinik for posting these. They are great!

I did not know about this..Oh,it had to be great time for them, I bet.

You're welcome Smile
I will also try to find that documentary but it's a slim chance because most of the sites that mention it is in French only.

I have got this documentary at home.
I must check but I think you can choose the language you want , at least english.

As far as colors are concerned they made the choice to show everything plain (all clothes are brown or beige, the stones and columns are unpainted and not decorated, aso).
To me it s a nineteenth century idealistic representation of ancient Greece close to the nature.
Nowadays I guess we have another perception of it which tends to consider (exagerating ?) it much more colorfull as we used to.
Without being too flashy or laquered I think we can go a bit further than them in the colour range !

If I recall correct they made the second attempt to show hoplitodormy.
I mentined them in my article but I need info about them to give them proper credit.
The first attempt was made by Angelos Sikeliano in the Delphic festival of 1925.

This seems a good documentary Comerus, but it's not the same! The other was a true re-enacting of real athletes who lived there for weeks. It was several episodes.
