Wooden training swords
#11
I had some salvaged oak timbers so I decided to see how hard this was.

The timber was 2-3" thick rough cut, salvaged from a downed oak in my yard with an alaskan chain mill I rigged myself.

I had to plane one edge down to get an edge smooth enough to run along my rip fence on my 8 1/4" portable table saw. I ripped it to an inch wide with a new carbide blade, but I didn't want to have to bother parring down the edges with a drawknife so I placed it on edge and tilted my blade to 15 degrees. Ran the blank through four times on each edge to get the bevel. Worked great right up until the fourth edge, as I no longer had a flat edge to work against the rip fence. So I had to readjust the blade to get the final edge, but I managed it.

Looks good and saves a lot of sanding and shaping. A little scary on the last cut though. Now I need to fit the hilt. I have some salvaged cherry that is 4" in diameter. I think I can shape a hilt out of that. Will post pictures soon.
