Hi Cheryl,
Although I hate to admit it, the Blue Guide to Crete is actually quite good! It covers most archaeological sites in decent detail and provides useful plans as well.
As far as the museum is concerned, I think that a temporary exhibition is going to be open by the time you arrive to Crete.
