Yes, I think it would be used to 'lob' a round so to speak, over fortifications, (in a siege or what ever), as well as direct fire!
mind you, it would probably only be really practical if there were quite a few weapons firing that way, for maximum effect, if used against another field army. with only a couple on line, a flatter trajectory shot would be more desirable for maximum damage...just guessing
