OK, I had read it as him being amazed at the great strength of the roman shield wall, and alarmed at the bristling
weapons of the phalanx.
It appears as though the Romans were being held back, where usually they steamrollered their adversaries, untill this occurred. That was how I read it originally anyhoo....funny how a shift of emphasis alters your perception of a written passage....i wonder if i should re read a few more sources, again... :roll:
