I must stand corrected just a little on my point about the Antonine period for there is I suppose evidence that the VIII AVG was also here earlier, or indeed a vexillation of it in the Hadrianic period also.
With it being found in the mouth of the river Tyne may well have to do with a ship that came to the fort at South Shields, I have read that Junius Dubitaus lost his shield in the river.
I do however have a theory that it was not his shield that was lost but a parade boss, infact it may well be that poor Junius also lost his life in the river Tyne.
