Where it has been suggested that all 8 bent nails or shall I say clenched rivets for the want of a better word have been washed out by river currents, would it not be just as equal to consider that 8 studs which may have taken slpit pins to hold this boss to the shield were already fitted in the battle boss belonging to Junius Dubitatus hence the reason for none of them to be there today.
In fact Mike Bishop does say that due to evidence and possible dating of the Vindonissa piece the Tyne boss may be dating on the antique should it have been lost in the Antonine period, then I would say very possible the Antonine and that it may have been kept in a bag and cared for very well by Junius from that point of view even to the fact he has his name and his Centurians to cover the event of it ever being stolen.
