Spartan(?) Eques
#1
I have uploaded a set of pictures to Flickr of a stele of a cavalryman:

[url:1o0t5frn]http://www.flickr.com/photos/rosscowan/sets/72157623467306615/[/url]

Notice that his oval shield is behind his legs, and his sword appears underneath his right hand. His horse's hooves may rest on a helmet. There is an armilla on his right wrist and he holds two javelins in his left hand. A woman - his grieving wife/mother? - stands to his left.

The photos were taken in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens back in 2001, but I have lost the details of the stele's date and where it was found. I seem to recall that it was labelled Spartan (or Laconian) and dated to the third century AD. Any suggestions?

Cheers,

R!
