Quote:Dumb question- but how would the restoration be done? Brazing the pieces together?
I am no conservator, but I work with museum collections a lot and these days restoration is always supposed to be reversible so brazing would be out. Since this was done by a reputable conservator, so far as I understand, I think you can rule that out. Think of how the original 1947 Sutton Hoo helmet reconstruction was undone and redone in 1968.
Quote:Why can't you just acknowledge the painstaking restoration work for the amazing achievement it is!
Because no chance was given for a detailed scientific examination of the archaeological artefact as it came out of the ground; instead somebody now has an expensive trinket. Priorities have got mixed somewhere along the line; as I've said before in another context, very clever, but not very intelligent.
