I don't have much experience with segmentata because I am a late Roman, but it sounds to me like Matt is right, could be a circulation problem caused by the armour. Your shield sounds like you have constructed it properly, from the finest materials (at least for us modern reenactors). Birch is an excellent choice for shields, because it is very strong and light. I don't think anything is wrong with your shield.
