"You know most people, especially hyper reenactors would NEVER buy a helmet that is exactly copied from that ..... It doesn't go w/ their notions of "Romaness" and their esthetics. Sad, but true."
Marsh,
As I suspect I may be one of those 'hyper re-enactors' you mentioned I think I might offer a perspective.
My own helmet was hand made by White Rose. Overall the workmanship is fantastic but the crest fitting is a little wobbly, one cheek guard squeaks a lot as I march and the neck guard is somewhat skew-wiff. I am very happy with this.
I took a great deal of time when making my sword scabbard to get the details right, but when one or two of the appliquee pieces ended up at slight angles I did not curse and remove them. Instead I felt they made the piece look more authentic.
My patera was made by Tony Feldon. It has one or two minor faults in the rim due to the casting process but they do not affect its performance and I am very happy with them.
I also have patches on my tunic and the apron on my belt is presently missing a couple of studs and three of its terminals. All in all I think this makes my impression look more authentically 'Roman'.
