I've read both Moi, and yes on balance I think the Alkibiades story is better told. He was a bit of a rogue though that lad! I also agree that the Pressfield treatment of Thermopylai should not form the basis of any future film. It is an interesting version of the story, but only to a point - but the hero of Thermopylai should always be Leonidas. Who frankly gives a toss about some dispossessed peasant? There is a big story already there - as relayed by Herodotos and others.
I've seen that Rutger Hauer Barbarossa film too - wouldn't bother with it again (even though he is very watchable). It was dull as dishwater. It's a long time since I saw Taras Bulba though! Cannot comment upon its historic accuracy (I mean period, because I know its a fictional story) - but was always a sucker for any film with Tony Curtis and Yul Brynner!!!
