No theory is 100% proven. A theory is a best-guess as to how something worked based on available evidence. As soon as new evidence turns up the theory has to be revised. Right now the best-guess as to the NOVAE plates (and all the other similar bronze plates) is a manica, not a segmentata. If someone uncovers a skeleton tomorrow with a torso that is shaped like an arm then that theory will need to be revised.
