Would it not be better to hammer the ends, with the peak held vertically, to spread the metal at the ends to the right shape, which could then be drilled or punched through? I'm sure that is how mine was made and it would surely avoid stressing the metal in the way that twisting it might in the hands of an inexperienced metal worker.
