Yes, I was aware that you had commented on hegemon. I was anxious to know if I had interpreted the verb correctly. The point, as I understand it, is that Mark seemed to be distinguishing between 'leading' in the sense of 'taking the lead' and 'commanding' in the sense of 'directing', and arguing that the latter could be accomplished from a rearward position, taking Polybius as his authority. Your clarification confirms my belief that no such distinction can be drawn from Polybius' wording.
