Legionary Officers and NCOs - Late Roman Army (284 - 565 AD)
#74
Quote:s there any papyrus or records I could research or need to know about displaying the term centurion ordinaries say after 325 AD?

Latin inscriptional evidence for the position of centurio ordinarius is hard to date ('third to fourth century' is the best bet), but there are later papyri from Egypt that record it.

You could follow up the links in Ross Cowan's post here as a good start.

The Elephantine papyri date from the 6th-7th century: various mentions of ordinarii can be found here.

Note that these late army documents concern limitanei forces, possibly including old-style legions, and do not mention centenarii or ducenarii. However, they do list the ranks of primicerius and vicarius, indicating that these positions formed part of the later hierarchy of frontier units.
