We all know tradition holds that before the consuls were elected there were seven kings of Rome, starting from Romulus.

Is there any historical evidence attesting to the actual existence of any of the kings, or that there may have been more than 7 kings? Traditional chronology would mean that the average reign was 35 years, which seems rather long for the time period.

Might the kings attested to Lavinium or Alba Longa in fact have reigned at Rome before the hilltops merged into one settlement?

If anybody knows, I'm all ears.
